How I Proved My Depression was Service Connected and WON My VA Claim

2 min read

As veterans, we put our lives on the line to serve and protect our country. However, this service often comes at a cost, as many of us return home with physical and mental health issues. One of the most common mental health conditions among veterans is depression.

Depression can greatly impact a person’s life, making it difficult to work, maintain relationships, and enjoy daily activities. If you are a veteran suffering from depression related to your time in service, you may be eligible for disability benefits through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
In this guide, I will share my personal journey winning a VA claim for depression and getting compensated, as well as valuable information on how to navigate the claims process and increase your chances of success.
My Journey Winning a VA Claim for Depression and Getting COMPENSATED

I first started experiencing symptoms of depression after returning from my deployment overseas. I struggled with adjusting back to civilian life and found it difficult to cope with the memories and experiences from my time in service.

After speaking with other veterans, I learned about the possibility of receiving disability benefits for conditions related to military service. So, I decided to file a claim with the VA for my depression.
However, like many others, my initial claim was denied. This only added to my feelings of frustration and hopelessness. But rather than giving up, I reached out to a Veterans Service Organization (VSO) for help.

My VSO guided me through the appeals process and helped me gather evidence to support my claim. We were able to obtain medical records from my time in service, as well as statements from fellow service members who witnessed changes in my behavior after deployment.

After submitting this new evidence, I was granted service connection for my depression and received a disability rating from the VA. This not only provided me with financial support but also validation for the struggles I had been facing.
